Everyone has heard of San Sebastián cheesecake. The famous Basque burnt cheesecake, made internationally popular by La Viña, is undeniably delicious. But here’s something many visitors don’t realise: our food culture has so much more to offer, especially when it comes to dessert.
Beyond Basque cheesecake: discover the desserts locals love
In San Sebastián, a good dessert isn’t just about following the latest food trend. It’s about wonderful ingredients, family recipes and the little pleasures that bring people around a table. From creamy arroz con leche and rich flan to the much-loved torrija, traditional sweets deserve their moment in the spotlight.
That’s exactly the spirit behind our cooking experiences at San Sebastian Cooking Classes: we love the dishes you’ve heard of, but we also want you to discover flavours you might never have tried before.
Meet torrija: a different kind of Spanish comfort food
If you’ve tried French toast, you have a starting point. But Spanish torrija has its own character: bread soaked until tender, then cooked until beautifully golden, with a soft centre and a rich, comforting flavour. Once a seasonal favourite, it’s now a dessert worth seeking out throughout the year.
Our version brings a playful twist: Baileys torrija. We prepare it using bread sourced from San Sebastián’s oldest pastry shop, bringing a piece of local baking history into the kitchen. It’s indulgent, memorable and a lovely way to finish a Basque meal.
A San Sebastián cooking class that goes beyond the obvious
Our hands-on Basque cooking class begins with a visit to the local market, where you’ll discover the ingredients behind our food traditions. Then it’s into the kitchen to cook tortilla de patatas, bacalao al pil-pil, txuleta and our Baileys torrija with local chefs.
After cooking, we sit down together to enjoy the dishes with a local drink. It’s sociable, relaxed and designed for anyone who wants to experience San Sebastián through its food, not just tick another famous dish off a list.
Come for the food. Leave with a new favourite.
San Sebastián cheesecake deserves its fame, but it isn’t the whole story. There are plenty of incredible desserts here waiting to be discovered. At SSCC, we’d love to introduce you to one of them.
